Acne is one of the more frequent health complaints that bring women into the clinic. The approach here is to first determine the cause of the skin disorder: for example high testosterone or other androgens (often associated with polycystic ovarian syndrome); high cortisol or stress hormones; food intolerance; nutritional choices; or sluggish liver function. Accurate testing can be done for most of these factors so that we can start a treatment plan by addressing the underlying cause. Topical treatments are rarely the answer for acne – they may improve it a little but will never eliminate it. A more comprehensive plan will restore balance to the body and clear the skin too.
