Autoimmune diseases are on the rise, as are many other immune conditions. More and more women are diagnosed with an hypothyroidism, rheumatoid arthritis, endometriosis and also with more rare forms of autoimmune disease such as lupus, alopecia, Sjogren’s, scleroderma and others. When an autoimmune disease occurs there is an imbalance in the immune system function and the body starts attacking itself. There are several strategies to stop this progression: eliminate immune stressors such as food intolerances and exposure to toxins or heavy metals; reduce overall body inflammation; work on stress levels; and modulate the immune system with herbs and supplements. In many cases, the progression of these conditions can be halted, and if caught early they can be reversed. The immune system can be retrained so that it is not over-reacting to things that are not a threat. This is an exciting and growing field, and one in which naturopathic medicine excels.
