Depression is a very common condition and one that often responds very well to naturopathic medicine. Since depression is a complicated condition, a combination of physiological support and assessment, as well as psychological counselling is often best. A naturopath can assess areas of health that may be contributing to depression such as: adrenal gland fatigue; thyroid dysfunction; nutritional deficiencies; food intolerances (a surprisingly big contributor to low mood); premenstrual syndrome or hormone imbalance; and menopause. By addressing the physical contributing factors, your emotional health will often improve. There are also natural supplements that are effective in treatment low-moderate depression on their own that can be explored. Treatment can also begin safely for those of you who are already on an antidepressant medication and need further mood support, or wish to discuss support in coming off of their medications. Depression which may range form mild feeling of sadness, disappointment or fatigue to deep despair. From a Gestalt therapy perspective depression is a repression of feeling, specifically anger. Often the root is change, trauma or loss. For a few the cause is disillusionment with life. Exploring the hidden pain and fear which has trigger the depressive response and reconnecting with body sensations in psychotherapy can be part of a holistic approach to healing. It is important to develop a trusting psychotherapeutic relationship where you can allow feelings to flow.
