What is Logan & Finley, and what makes you unique?
Logan and Finley is an urban general store in the heart of the West Queen West neighbourhood in Toronto. We feature thoughtfully chosen, well designed, ethically sourced clothing for men and women, accessories, skin care, cleaning products, food storage, specialty food, gifts and cards. Each matches our criteria of being built to last, local or natural. I think what makes us unique is likely that we are a quiet little escape from the busy life most people live, and offer sustainable options for things people use everyday. We try to offer a service level that exceeds people’s expectations as well and we often get comments like “I don’t really like to shop – thanks for making it easy for me”
Your shop carries items that are ‘Natural, Local and Built to Last’ – why are these things important to you?
Built to last is really important to me, since I have always preferred quality over quantity. I enjoy having nice things and also enjoy using them regularly and feel that being mindful about what I choose to buy has a big impact on my life and hopefully on the world around me. If I can waste less and enjoy more, this is a win for me – and it’s also at the heart of the product selection process for Logan & Finley. My practical sensibility is at the root of Logan & Finley and informs the brand in many ways. Local is important to me on several levels – we strive to be a good neighbour and good resource for our customers and give people a “shop local” choice that measures up to their needs and we love to promote the local talents of those around us who design and make beautiful useful things. And the Natural stems from my love of nature, natural fibres in clothing, and chemical free products for our everyday lives. I have personally lived a green lifestyle for a long time and feel that using “cleaner” ingredients has helped my health and hopefully has a positive impact on the world around me as well.
What do you love about being a part of our great Queen West community?
I have always loved the Queen Street West part of Toronto and I think it’s mostly because I am a big fan of the uniqueness and creativity of small, indie businesses. While the neighbourhood is continuing to evolve, I think it still has a down to earth, creative vibe with some great local shops and restaurants that have been fixtures of the community for 10+ years. I admire and support these businesses, and plan to be the local fixture offering sustainable products for years to come. There are really great businesses that are in walking distance to the neighbourhood, and we are close to downtown and get a lot of tourism as well as people from other parts of the GTA regularly for their yoga, haircuts or brunch…and combine this with the really down to earth people who live in the neighbourhood…and we get to see really interesting people all day long and this makes for a great community.
You are quite active in the community, with things like the auction you did for Fort McMurray, lectures, Brunch & Learns, fashion shows and events like the recent Bump to Baby Show. Can you tell us about some of your upcoming events?
We generally have a brunch and learn, an evening event and a book club each 4-6 weeks, but we do a little less in the Summer since so many people are away. We are thrilled to offer people the opportunity to learn about new things, be a part of our community and have some fun. And we like the opportunity to introduce our brand to new people too. We are hoping to have a lunch and learn this month and an evening fashion event – but these are still in the planning stages and our next Book Club meet-up is July 14th. We do list our events on social media and in our monthly newsletter and hope some of you will check one of these out in the future.
Can you tell us about a few of your favourite items or brands, and why you love them?
I have never been good at the favourites question…..somedays it’s blueberries and others it’s bananas if you know what I mean! But there are some staples that I personally use and enjoy and enjoy introducing to our customers and I hope those of you who come and visit our store, will take time to discover these with us. If you are looking for an amazing food storage option – we heartily recommend Abeego wraps. They are made in Victoria, from hemp, beeswax, jojoba and tree resin and offer a permanent solution to covering containers or wrapping up food. You use less plastic, create less waster – but the best part about it, is that you keep your food fresher longer. I use the Sapadilla hand soap and dish soap daily and what I life best about this made in Vancouver brand is that it actually works, it cleans, smells great and is plant based, biodegradable and doesn’t leave your hands smelling like soap. I clean my sink and kitchen counters daily ( well I try to do this daily!) with C is for Clean vinegar based spray cleaner that’s made in Toronto. I change up my skincare a bit as I test new things for the store, but right now I am enjoying the relief from my seasonal allergies from Florivera’s Mentaliptus – they call it a natural decongestant and I have used since we opened up the shop the all natural and super effective Crawford Street Skin Care deodorant. I wear clothing from the store and a couple of my “uniform” pieces are my bamboo layering tanks by made in Toronto brand Miik, but the thing I likely wear the most, and love putting on other people is the Emily Blazer that’s also made by Miik. It fits really well and is comfortable and stylish and versatile enough to wear with almost anything – so if you have a minimalist wardrobe like me, you will love it or if you travel, you will love it or if you…………fill in the blanks, you will love it.
What do you love about being an entrepreneur?
I like that some of my natural talents can be put to effective use in my day to day work life. I like helping people and providing great service and a comfortable inspiring shopping experience to people but really I just love that I get out of bed every day inspired to do work that’s meaningful to me – and hopefully to those around me. I have always been very driven and career focused – it’s part of who I am, but now it means a lot more to me to see the results of creating and developing my own brand. When it resonates with people it’s really exciting for me and continues to inspire me to work hard. I have been self employed for the majority of my career and I think this is a good thing for me since I think my approach to work has always been very entrepreneurial. Now the expectations that I seek to meet and exceed on a day to day basis are the people using the products I sell and this is what I have always thought my job was……so it’s great that now it is!
