This season we’re seeing a lot of otherwise-healthy people coming down with a bad case of the viral flu. For some people this means stomach and bowel symptoms, and for others it can be a sore throat with mucous, congestion, and feeling run down. Either way, naturopathic medicine can be extremely effective for treating viral infections and helping you get back on your feet as soon as possible.
Why IV therapy?
One of the most powerful ways of addressing a cold or flu is through intravenous (IV) therapy. IV therapy allows us to get a higher dose of nutrients into the body than what we could otherwise achieve with oral supplementation. It also allows us to bypass the digestive tract, so if you’re experiencing GI upset or don’t absorb nutrients well, then IV therapy can be extremely effective.
IV therapy can be used to fight acute infection, and to replenish the body and boost your energy so that you don’t feel run-down after fighting the flu.
What is in the IV treatment?
Depending on your other health conditions, allergies, and medications, your IV will include a variety of nutrients and minerals to help boost your immune system.
Your IV will have a B complex with an extra boost of vitamin B5, B6 and B12 to increase energy and multiply your army of white blood cells.
When you’re fighting infection, your immune cells increase their requirements for vitamin C. Your IV will have a high amount of vitamin C to meet this increased requirement, thereby enhancing your immune function. Lab testing is required for extra-high dosing of vitamin C, and your ND may decide to send you for that test if you require higher dosing at your next visit.
The minerals selenium and zinc are also added in high doses to your bag. These minerals boost and regulate the immune system to prevent excessive inflammation and help kill viruses.
Finally, the extra nutrient that packs the a huge punch for fighting infection is hydrochloric acid. This works by increasing white and red blood cell counts and improving phagocytosis, the process whereby your immune cells remove pathogens from the body.
What to expect at your first IV therapy visit
An IV treatment can be booked at Darou Wellness on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. During your first visit, your ND will do a full assessment of your health history, allergies, supplements and medications so that she can design an IV treatment that is specific and safe for you. She will also do a physical examination of your vitals (blood pressure, temperature, etc.) and your major organ systems (heart, lungs, etc.). You will then move on to receive your first IV treatment, which can take anywhere from 20 – 60 minutes.
The atmosphere at Darou Wellness is relaxing and comfortable. Wear comfy clothes, bring a book, and get ready to kick back while you receive your IV. We use gentle IV solutions and equipment, so your IV shouldn’t cause discomfort. We also monitor you continuously to ensure safety throughout your treatment.
Booking your appointment
Your IV appointment can be booked online or by phoning the clinic (416-214-9251). If you’re coming in for an immune-boosting IV, please make a note of it in the “notes” section when booking your appointment. If you are acutely ill and could be contagious, please let our receptionist know so that we can be sure to take extra precautions to prevent other patients from becoming ill.
We hope you have a healthy winter season, but if you do need some cold and flu support, please don’t hesitate to give your immune system a boost with IV therapy.
