Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is a frequently diagnosed condition. It results in a combination of symptoms that can include: irregular menstruation and anovulation, acne, weight gain, facial hair growth (hirsutism), head hair loss. In some cases though, not all of these symptoms may be present – for example there is a subset of patients with PCOS who are thin, but have irregular menstruation usually in combination with acne. In most cases the root of PCOS in all types is a blood sugar imbalance known as insulin resistance. With correct dietary and exercise interventions, most women with PCOS are able to achieve regular menstruation, ovulation and in many cases fertility. The treatment for PCOS is primarily lifestyle interventions, but may also include acupuncture and supplements to support correction of the hormonal imbalance. The treatment of PCOS with natural supplements is highly researched area, and there are safe and effective alternatives to birth control pills and fertility drugs to manage this condition.
