Intravenous (IV) therapy is a safe and efficient way to deliver vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly to the body. IV therapy is different from oral supplementation because it allows us to achieve higher concentrations of nutrients by bypassing the digestive tract and going directly to tissues and organs via the blood stream.
IV therapy can be used to treat a variety of health conditions, or simply to give you an extra boost of nutrients. Here are the top ten conditions that can be treated with IV therapy:
1. Low Energy
We could all use a little energy boost! Common signs of low energy are feeling tired on waking, and having an energy crash in the mid-afternoon. An energy boosting IV treatment contains high doses of B vitamins, which help to convert your food into energy. It also contains minerals to act as co-factors (helpers) to the B-vitamins as they work in the body to boost your energy.
2. Stress & Anxiety
When we feel stressed or anxious, the body can be in “flight or fight” mode more often than it should be. This can lead to the depletion of nutrients, adrenal fatigue, and feeling “tired but wired”. Our stress and anxiety IV treatments contain extra magnesium for relaxation, adrenal-supporting nutrients like B5 and vitamin C, and methylated B12, which crosses the blood-brain barrier to reduce anxiety and stress.
Autumn is a great time to reset the body with a detox. This type of IV treatment enhances the liver’s detoxification pathways to improve the metabolism and elimination of toxins from the body. Glutathione is a powerhouse for detoxifying toxins and hormones in the liver, and is used in these IVs along with Selenium, B complex and other nutrients to give your detox an extra boost.
4. Migraines & Headaches
Migraines and headaches can be effectively treated with IV therapy. Combined with other nutrients, high dose magnesium is used to dilate blood vessels and relax the muscles. This can be used acutely (during a migraine or headache) to quickly and effectively treat the episode, or chronically to replenish depleted magnesium and other nutrient stores to reduce the frequency and severity of migraines and headaches.
5. Cold & Flu
Cold and flu season is fast approaching! IV therapy can be used to boost the immune system and reduce the likelihood of getting sick, or it can be used if you’re already suffering from a bacterial or viral infections. This IV works by providing the nutrients necessary to build new white blood cells to combat infection, including vitamin C and hydrochloric acid. Please let us know if you’re coming in during an illness so that we can take appropriate health precautions to protect other patients.
6. Hormone Balancing
Hormone balancing treatment is used if you’re experiencing menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, and night sweats, or have excess estrogen levels as seen in fibroids and endometriosis. The IV provides your body with the nutrients needed to detoxify excess hormones and promote stable hormone levels.
7. Morning Sickness
IV therapy is one of the most effective strategies for treating morning sickness (nausea and vomiting in pregnancy). IV treatments bypass the digestive tract to replenish electrolytes and vitamins that were lost due to vomiting or lack of appetite. It also provides vitamin B6, which is an extremely effective treatment for preventing future episodes of nausea and morning sickness.
8. Surgery, Injury, & Athletic Recovery
The body requires higher levels of certain nutrients and amino acids to heal after surgery, injury, or high-level athletic performance such as marathon training or body-building. Tissue repair and athletic recovery time is significantly improved with the administration of IV amino acids (including L-glutamine), vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
9. Adjunctive Cancer Treatment
High dose vitamin C IV therapy has been shown to improve efficacy of chemotherapy and radiation treatments in some cancers, and improve quality of life in cancer patients. Viscum album IV treatments can also provide improved quality of life, reduce myelosupporession, and improve treatment response in cancer patients. 10. Digestive Conditions: Crohn’s, Colitis, IBS, SIBO, GERD, and Celiac disease
In diseases of the digestive tract, we often are unable to effectively absorb nutrients from our food. IV therapy is effective because it allows nutrients to bypass the digestive tract. Treatment includes general nutrients and vitamins, ulcer-healing nutrients (if necessary), and L-glutamine to assist with reducing inflammation and gut healing.
IV treatments are always modified to address your individual needs. There are many other conditions not mentioned here that can be treated with IV therapy, including hangovers, macular degeneration, and fertility. For more information, visit our website or speak with your Naturopathic Doctor.
